We are kicking off the policy portion of the interim with a
discussion featuring Sunset Commission Review Directors Robert Romig and Emily Johnson. Of note is that Romig has been involved in multiple high profile reviews during the past few cycles and Johnson was a Review Director during the 2013 TEC Sunset Review.
Newly appointed Sunset Commission Executive Director Eric Beverly will also join the discussion to say a few words about the Sunset process.
Roundtable topics will include an overview of the Sunset review process, agencies up for review in the 2024/2025 cycle (including the Texas Ethics Commission), and how stakeholders can effectively be involved. As part of the discussion, Romig and Johnson will advise on the best ways to contact project managers once the agency assignments have been made (staff assignments are expected to be released publicly soon), as well as offer options for general stakeholder input if you or your clients would like to provide more individualized comments for a specific agency under review. The Commission has contact lists for agencies, and they will also outline how to ensure associations or other contacts are included in the updates during the reviews and stakeholder surveys.
Of note is that the last Sunset Review of the Texas Ethics Commission in 2012-2013 resulted in the passage of Senate Bill 219 (83R). The bill, however, was vetoed by the Governor. PAAT will be involved in the Sunset review cycle for the Ethics Commission in a variety of ways - including submitting recommendations for improvements to the ethics laws and processes and monitoring the review process.
