 ETHICS COMMISSION  SUNSET REVIEW

The Texas Ethics Commission underwent Sunset Review during the 2024–2025 cycle (89th Legislative Session). PAAT actively participated in the process—submitting formal recommendations to strengthen ethics laws and procedures and monitoring related legislative activity throughout the session. Despite this engagement, no Sunset legislation for the Commission passed in either chamber.

This echoes the outcome of the 2012–2013 Sunset cycle, when Senate Bill 219 (83R), which incorporated Sunset recommendations, was ultimately vetoed by the Governor. Notably, unlike most state agencies, the Texas Ethics Commission cannot be abolished due to legislative inaction. Created through a constitutional am endment approved by Texas voters, the Commission’s continued existence is guaranteed regardless of whether Sunset legislation is enacted.
